The official name of Maldives is the Republic of Maldives. It is an island and archipelago in Indian Ocean. It lies south west of Srilanka and India. It has 1199 pearl look like islands. The total area of
this country is 298 square kilometers. It has a population of about 3,14,365(2014 censuses). Maldives is a Muslim majority country. From the mid sixteenth century colonial powers dominated the country.
It is the smallest Asian country in both land area and population. The names Maldives may derive from the Malayan words. ‘Maala’ (garland) and ‘Dweep’ (island). The Maldivian people are called
Dhivehin. Early settlers of Maldives were Dravidian people. People from southern India and Srilanka settled there in the 4th and 5th century BC. In the 12th century Buddhist Maldivians were converted
to Sunni Muslim by the influence of Arabians. Maldives was ruled as an independent Islamic sultanate from 1153 to 1968. The islands gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1965 and became
a republic in 1968. Maldivian economy is dominated by tourism and fishing. Maldives is one of the world’s most dispersed countries. Maldives is a popular tourist attraction for its enjoyable weather,
scenic beauties, luxurious resorts and sea-beaches. Maldives is the lowest Country in the world and it at high risk of being submerged due to rising sea levels.
