The Statue of liberty
The statue of ‘Liberty Enlightening The World’ was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States. It is recognized as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. It is situated on Liberty Island in New York harbor. ‘Frederich Auguste Bartholdi’ who was a French sculptor designed this copper statue and Gustavo Eiffel built it. It was dedicated on
October 28, 1886. The statue is a robed female figure who bears a torch in her right hand and a book in her left hand upon which is inscribed the date of the ‘American declaration of Independence’ July 4, 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet. The broken chain symbolizes the overthrow of tyranny. Its height from base to torch is 151 feet and 1 inch (940 meters) and from the pedestal to the torch is 305 feet 1 inch (93 meters). The weight of the statue is 254 tons. Now it’s governed by US National park service. The statue is an icon of freedom and a welcoming sight to immigrants arriving from abroad.
